'Illuminating the Community'

Introduction:

The Art in the Dark Community Project is an organization that seeks to develop and explore forms of urban community and community-building through design participation. On this basis we are hosting an event called ‘Art in the Dark’ which focuses on art, design and community. The theme for the event is ‘Community, Environment and Utopias’ and artists are invited to base works on one or more of these concepts.

Issues of lighting and illumination are integral to the event given that it will be held at night. Interactive and environmentally friendly projects are similarly encouraged, particularly in their community-building capacity.

‘Art in the Dark’ aims to be an ongoing annual event and we encourage artists to explore the implications of mobility, night, sky and light in their projects. Importantly, the ‘Art in the Dark’ organization is concerned with developing alternative structures for social organization and sustainability, which will allow people to work together towards environmental betterment.

Brief:

The event asks artists to collaborate on event-based projects including short film, installation and performance. The event seeks to be Carbon Neutral and the installations and structures should aim to use renewable sources of energy. It will be a nighttime event centred around and potentially inside a temporary purpose-built pavilion located in Western Park, Ponsonby.
The event is to be held in the first week of September and projects will need to be designed to withstand 2 days of spring weather.

Projects we hope to see include:

Kinetic Structures/Sculptures
Light Installations
Interactive Projects
Spatial Projects/Landscapes
Community Projects
Sound Installations
Short Films
Artworks

Format:

‘Art in the Dark’ aims to be an annual event held on the first day of spring each year and intends to emphasize issues associated with renewal and re-growth. Ideally artists will collaborate with the local community. While artists may choose to do independent works, we encourage collaborate approaches.

Objectives:

Bringing people together to develop stronger senses of community in the area.
Providing a platform for creative interaction within the Grey Lynn/Ponsonby community.
Foster awareness of environmental issues.
Contribute additional festival/events to the local calendar of events, many of which already explore the possibilities of lighting and night.
Foster challenging and cutting-edge art and design practices.

Theme Outline:

Community: Exploring ways to activate solidarity and encourage diversity in the local community. Consider ways to reinvigorate the public sphere.
Utopia: Utopia seeks to transform physical space through imaginative discourse thereby challenging the existing organization of cities and the fixity of the built environment.
Environment: Bringing the community together to work towards a sustainable community and environmental betterment.

Process:

We are calling on concept proposals throughout the month of May. Following this stage a weekend workshop and site visit will be held to meet artists and find ways to collaborate.
Artist participation will be finalized in June.
